Why Are My TikTok Direct Messages Not Working in Statusbrew?

Troubleshoot TikTok DM issues in Statusbrew Engage, including messages not syncing and errors when sending replies.

Who Can Do This?

All users with access to the connected TikTok profile in Engage can reply to TikTok DMs. Admins and above can update profile permissions in Settings.

TikTok DM management is available on all plans that include Engage.

Before You Start: TikTok DM Requirements

TikTok DMs in Statusbrew only work when all of the following are true:

  • Your TikTok account is a Business account (not Personal or Creator)

  • Your account is registered in APAC, LATAM, METAP, or North America

  • The user's message (or message request) has been accepted in the native TikTok app

If any of these conditions aren't met, DMs won't appear in Engage, or replies won't be sent.

TikTok DM support was added to Statusbrew in August 2025.

TikTok DMs Are Not Appearing in Engage

Work through these causes in order.

Your account is in a restricted region

TikTok's Business Messaging API is currently only available for accounts in APAC, LATAM, METAP, and North America. This is a TikTok platform restriction, not a Statusbrew limitation, and there is no workaround.

If your TikTok Business account is registered outside these regions, DMs cannot be received or managed through Statusbrew at this time. Statusbrew does not currently display an error for this; DMs simply will not appear in Engage.

Your TikTok account is not a Business account

TikTok only allows third-party tools to access DMs on Business accounts. Personal and Creator accounts are not supported.

To check or switch your account type, open the TikTok app → go to your profile → tap the menu icon → Settings and privacyAccountSwitch to Business Account.

Once switched, return to Statusbrew and reconnect your TikTok profile.

Statusbrew does not display a warning when a connected TikTok profile is a Personal account. If DMs aren't appearing and you're unsure of your account type, check directly in the TikTok app.

A message request hasn't been accepted in TikTok

TikTok routes DMs from users who don't follow your account as message requests. These must be accepted manually in the native TikTok app before they appear in Statusbrew.

To accept pending message requests:

  • Open the TikTok app.

  • Tap InboxMessages.

  • Look for a Message Requests section and accept any pending requests.

Once accepted, the conversation will sync into Statusbrew Engage.

DMs from users who already follow your TikTok account go directly to your inbox and sync to Statusbrew without requiring manual acceptance.

The TikTok profile needs reauthentication

If Statusbrew has lost its connection to your TikTok account, DMs will stop syncing entirely.

Go to Settings Profiles and look for a red badge on your TikTok profile.

Hovering over it shows the tooltip "This profile needs to be reauthenticated." You'll also see a Reauthenticate tab appear at the top of the profiles list.

To fix this:

  • Click beside the TikTok profile.

  • Select Reauthenticate.

  • Log in to TikTok and confirm permissions.

Any DMs that arrived while your profile was disconnected will not appear in Engage after reconnecting. Only new DMs received after reauthentication will sync.

Error When Sending a TikTok DM Reply

The TikTok profile needs reauthentication

If your profile shows a red badge in Settings → Profiles, replies will fail until you reauthenticate. Follow the reauthentication steps above.

What Happens After You Fix It

Once the profile is authenticated, inbound TikTok DMs sync in real time. Replies sent from Statusbrew appear in the TikTok DM thread immediately.

You cannot initiate new DM conversations from Statusbrew. TikTok only allows replies to messages that a user has sent to you first. You also have a 48-hour window to reply after receiving a message, after that, the conversation can no longer be responded to. The window resets to 48 hours each time the user sends a new message.

FAQs

Does Statusbrew support TikTok DMs?

Yes. Statusbrew supports inbound TikTok Direct Messages in Engage. DMs sync in real time, and you can reply, close, tag, and assign conversations just like any other message type. A TikTok Business account is required, and the feature is currently only available for accounts in APAC, LATAM, METAP, and North America.

My TikTok account is not in APAC, LATAM, METAP, or North America. Can I use TikTok DMs in Statusbrew?

No. TikTok's Business Messaging API is currently only available for accounts in APAC, LATAM, METAP, and North America. This is a TikTok platform restriction, and Statusbrew cannot work around it. No error will appear in Statusbrew; DMs simply will not sync for accounts outside these regions.

Do I need a TikTok Business account?

Yes. TikTok only allows third-party tools to access DMs for Business accounts. Personal and Creator accounts are not supported. You can switch to a Business account for free directly in the TikTok app.

A user DM'd me, but their message isn't showing in Statusbrew. Why?

If the user doesn't follow your TikTok account, their message arrives as a message request and must be accepted in the native TikTok app first. Open TikTok → InboxMessagesMessage Requests and accept it. It will then sync into Statusbrew.

Can I send a DM to a TikTok user from Statusbrew first?

No. TikTok only allows replies to messages you send first. You cannot initiate outbound DM conversations through Statusbrew or any other third-party tool.

Why can I see TikTok comments in Engage but not DMs?

Comments and DMs use different TikTok API permissions. If DMs aren't appearing, work through the causes listed in this article, starting with the regional restriction check.

Is there a character limit for TikTok DM replies?

Yes. TikTok DM replies are limited to 150 characters, including spaces. The reply box in Statusbrew Engage enforces this with a character counter — you won't be able to type beyond it.

How long do I have to reply to a TikTok DM?

TikTok enforces a 48-hour reply window. Once a user sends you a message, you have 48 hours to reply. After that, the conversation cannot be responded to. The window resets to 48 hours each time the user sends a new message.

Can all team members see and reply to TikTok DMs?

Access to TikTok DMs in Engage follows the same profile-level permissions as other conversation types. Team members need access to the connected TikTok profile to see its DMs. Admins can manage this from Settings → Profiles.
