Instagram Is Testing A New Stories Layout on Desktop

Jan 12, 2021 1 min read

Instagram is bringing a new carousel-style format for viewing stories on a desktop. The new design makes it easier to scroll through stories on the bigger screen.

You'll be able to still navigate through Instagram stories with the same controls as the phone app, but you can now skip to the subsequent story tiles or jump to previous ones.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the new layout also makes it easier to track which stories you've watched & which ones are coming up.

You can also leave the stories to play themselves out automatically as well.

According to an Instagram spokesperson, the new stories is format is still in the limited testing phase, and only a small group of users have access to the new layout. Once Instagram gets ample feedback from the testing group & all the bugs are ironed out, we can see a wider rollout.

Recently, Instagram has been pushing many changes to the desktop version to bring it on par with the phone app. The ability to access DMs (direct messages), IG live stream & more such features were added in the last few months.

Instagram stories have become insanely popular in recent times & have even superseded the news feed in terms of user engagement. It seems likely that, at some stage, Instagram will prioritize Stories over the main feed & improvement to the stories interface will help the desktop version evolve further & help maximize the Instagram experience on the bigger screens.
